Floors we’re asked to fix in Fort Pierce

Fort Pierce is the county seat of St. Lucie County, with 47,297 residents at the 2020 Census. It takes its name from an army post built in 1838 during the Second Seminole War. The city fronts the Indian River Lagoon, Fort Pierce Inlet opens the lagoon to the Atlantic, and Hutchinson Island sits on the ocean side of the water.

By local standards the housing is old. Census ACS estimates date about 44 percent of Fort Pierce homes to before 1980, and close to 30 percent of units are in buildings with five or more apartments. Some of the Fort Pierce ZIP codes we cover run past the city limits into unincorporated St. Lucie County, so the house we measure may be downtown, out west or on the island.

Pre-1980 houses with layers underneath

A house built in the 1950s or 1960s has usually been re-floored more than once. Carpet may sit on sheet vinyl, which may sit on an older tile. Before we price anything, the installer lifts a corner where it won’t show and works out what is actually down there.

Older tile and its black adhesive can contain materials that shouldn’t be disturbed casually. Get older tile and its adhesive tested by a lab before any demolition. If the tile is sound and flat, and the plank maker allows it, a rigid SPC plank can often float right over it, which avoids demolition altogether.

Apartment buildings and island condos

With close to a third of city housing in larger buildings, many Fort Pierce jobs come with an association attached. Most boards want a written request, product specs and a certificate of insurance before a crew arrives, and many limit the days and hours for noisy work.

We help with the association’s approval paperwork and install the sound-rated underlayment your building requires. We can’t promise how a board will vote, and we won’t quote a sound number as a sure pass; we match the rating your association requires. See condo flooring for how that process runs.

Frances, Jeanne and the inlet

Two hurricanes made landfall on Hutchinson Island south of the city in 2004, and the National Hurricane Center logged Jeanne’s highest Florida gust, 111 knots, at Fort Pierce Inlet. The storms damaged the city marina badly enough that FEMA required the rebuilt facility to be protected against future events.

What that means for a floor: a waterproof floor handles spills, leaks and a damp slab, and SPC plank won’t swell from a burst supply line or a roof drip. Standing floodwater is a different matter. FEMA Technical Bulletin 2 doesn’t class vinyl as flood-damage-resistant, so a flooded room needs drying and repairs before we lay anything. Our water-damaged floor page covers that order.

Pricing a Fort Pierce room

Our estimate is $5 to $12 per square foot installed, before your discount. A 200 square foot room is roughly $1,200 to $1,900 before the discount. Old layers to remove, a slab that needs leveling, or a lot of doorways and transitions push a job toward the upper end.

The cost calculator gives a first number from your square footage. The firm figure comes after the free in-home measurement, and the 50% off your flooring installation applies to the labor.

Fort Pierce FAQ

Straight answers

Do you install flooring in Fort Pierce?

Yes. Our crews cover all ten Fort Pierce ZIP codes we serve, including the areas outside the city limits and the Hutchinson Island side, as part of our Treasure Coast service area.

What does vinyl plank cost in Fort Pierce?

Our estimate is $5 to $12 per square foot installed, before your discount. A 200 square foot room is roughly $1,200 to $1,900 before the discount. Removing several old layers or leveling an uneven slab adds to the total, and the measurement settles the number.

Can you put new flooring in a Fort Pierce condo?

Yes. We help with the association’s approval paperwork and install the sound-rated underlayment your building requires. The board makes the final call, so we plan the install date after its approval arrives.

My house in Fort Pierce is from the 1960s. Can plank go over the old floor?

Often, if the old floor is tile that’s bonded well and flat, and the plank maker allows it. Carpet and loose vinyl come up first. Old tile that has to come up gets a lab test first, adhesive included.

Will vinyl plank survive a hurricane leak?

It handles the kind of water most homes see: a roof drip, a supply line, a tracked-in puddle. Standing floodwater or surge is different, and FEMA Technical Bulletin 2 doesn’t class vinyl as flood-damage-resistant.

Does the humidity near the inlet affect the install?

The planks sit in the air-conditioned house for the time the maker specifies before we lay them, and we keep the expansion gap at the walls. With the AC running, SPC plank stays stable.

How soon can you start in Fort Pierce?

The free measurement comes first. Next-day installation is available. Most installs are completed in a single day once your materials arrive, though whole-house or condo jobs can take longer.

Do you haul away the old tile and carpet?

Yes. Removal and disposal are part of the estimate, along with any slab prep the installer finds is needed.

Is the warranty good if I sell my Fort Pierce home?

The Limited Lifetime Warranty covers you as the owner and doesn’t transfer to the next buyer. Details are on our warranty page.
